Week of 4/30/07

Greetings all you girls and guys in 634, 734, & 834. It is hard to believe May is already here. 634, you will be finishing The Crossing, and begin to write a Response to Literature for our Gary Paulsen Author Study. 734, you will be finishing your Executive Summary, and be introduced to Virginia Hamilton, your last author study. 834, you will continue to read and become immersed in the works of Ray Bradbury. Homework is as follows:

5/4/07
634: In Reader's Source Book, make an entry entitled: The Crossing. Write a summary of the book. Describe your reaction to this book's conclusion.
734: Read Chapter 1 and 2 in your Virginia Hamilton book. Make an entry in your IRL.
834: Revise/edit your response on loose leaf.
5/3/07

634: In RSB, write a paragraph answering this question: "Are Manny and Sergeant Locke good for each other?" Support your opinion using details from the book. Title your entry "Manny and Sergeant Locke."
734: Use your notes to write a paragraph about Virginia Hamilton on loose leaf. In RSB, make an entry: "My First Impression of VH's Books."
834: Reread "All Summer in A Day." Make entries under the 'Response' margin next to the lines that evoke a visualization, connection, questions or any other reflection.
5/2/07

634: Write a paragraph on loose leaf to explain why Sgt. Locke became upset at the bullfight.
734: Final Executive Summarey due.

834: Read "Uncle Einar" and complete pages 204-205 in your Ray Bradbury Packets.

Week of 4/23/07

Greetings all you girls & guys in 634, 734, & 834. We have a lot going on this week. 634, you are halfway through your second Paulsen book in class - and continuing on your second ( or third) independent Paulsen book. 734, you have just completed your Polling Report, and are up to the actual Executive Summary part of your genre study. 834, you are beginning your Ray Bradbury Author Genre Study this week. Homework is as follows:

4/27/07
634: Continue your Paulsen book. Make an entry in your IRL. Revise your paragraph on Manny or Sgt. Locke on loose leaf.
734: COMPLETE your first draft of your Executive Summary ON LOOSE LEAF.
834: Make an entry in your Reader's Source Book, in the Ray Bradbury Table of Contents, entitled "How Ray Bradbury Manipulates Time." Explain how Bradbury alters time in both "Hail and Farewell" and in "Night Meeting."
4/26/07

634: Draw the following semantic scales for Sgt. Locke: Selfish----Caring; Greedy----Generous; Cold----Compassionate. Draw the following semantic scales for Manny: Weak---- Strong; Dependent----Independent ;

4/24/07

634: Revise your letter of advice to Sgt. Locke, on loose leaf.
734: Do research on who your Executive Summary should be addressed to. Write a paragraph explaining why this person will be effective in solving the problem.
834: Write a one page report on the Ray Bradbury film we watched in class. Continue to do research Ray Bradbury.
4/23/07

634: Write a GOOD paragraph analyzing either Sgt. Locke or Manny. Include a description of his appearance, how he lives, what he thinks, what he wants, and how he feels.

734: Rewrite your quick write, separating it into the 3 subtopics: seriousness of problem, causes of problem/ solutions for problem.

834: Do some research on Ray Bradbury. Highlight or take notes on important or interesting facts about him.

Greetings 634, 734 & 834. We have begun the fourth marking period and are well into our genre studies. 634, you are reading the second Gary Paulsen book, The Crossing. 734, you will be finishing your polling report this week. 834, you have begun your first draft for your historical fiction story on loose leaf, and will finish it this week. Homework is as follows:

4/20/07
634: Read in your Paulsen book #2 (or #3). Make a predict/support chart for your book. Revise literary letter on loose leaf.
734: Complete final draft of your Polling Report.
834: On loose leaf, write a paragraph about the strengths and weaknesses you noted in today's class presentations.
4/19/07

634: Continue nreading in your Paulsen book #2. Make an entry in the Character Feels/ I Feel chart.
734: Complete 1st draft of Polling Report on loose leaf.
834: Continue working on Historical Fiction story. Final draft due tomorrow!

4/18/07

634: On loose leaf, write a letter of advice to Sergeant Locke.

734: Revise and edit polling report in WSB.

Welcome back from Spring break. 634, you have begun to read The Crossing by Gary Paulsen, and will continue to analyze Gary Paulsen's work. 734, you will finish conducting your surveys, and begin tabulating the results for part of your Executive Summary assignment. 834, you are finishing reading your histporical fiction books, and continuing to plot out the journey cycle for your own historical fiction story. Homework is as follows:

4/11/07
634: Finish Paulsen book #1. Test on Friday.
734: In Writer's Source Book, in your Executive Summary Table of Contents, create bar graphs for 3 of your important questions, based on the results of your survey.
834: Finish reading historical fiction book. Test tomorrow. Complete Historical Fiction worksheet for your story.

4/12/07
634: Review your Paulsen book #1. Test tomorrow.
734: Complete tabulating the responses to your forced choice questions.
834: Complete your character's journey cycle in your WSB.
4/13/07
634: Continue reading Paulsen book #2. Make an entry in your IRL.
734: Complete conducting and tabulating your survey results for all 20 respondents.
834: Complete your character's journey cycle in your WSB. Bring in research for your character's country that is relevant to the time period your character lived in.

Week of 4/2/07 - Spring Break

Greetings all you girls & guys in 634,734, and 834. I hope you are all enjoying your vacation -wherever you are! Just a little reminder of what needs to be done for ELA by Wednesday, 4/11/07 - the day we return to school.

634 - Those of you reading The Monument or Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen, need to finish the book, making an entry for each chapter in your IRL. Those of you reading your Paulsen book #2 (Danger on Midnight River or Tracker) need to have read through Chapter 5 of your new book, and make an entry in your IRL. Your Woodsong literary letter (if not already handed in) MUST be done. A literary letter on your first independent Paulsen book must also be handed in on loose leaf. The reader's response sheet in your homework packet can be on one of your Paulsen books.

734 - Conduct your survey on your issue for at least 20 people. Bring your completed questionnaires to class. Read your independent reading book, making an entry in your IRL's.
Complete the vacation packet for ELA.

834 - Finish your historical fiction books, making an entry in your IRL for each chapter.
Complete the journey cycle in your HF packet for the historical fiction character you made up.
Complete the vacation packet. The reader's response sheet may be on your HF book.
